Project Summary
SLSCO played a crucial role during Hurricane Ian by swiftly deploying over 250 clinical staff to assist in evacuation shelters in Lee County, FL. They provided essential medical care to vulnerable evacuees throughout the 79-day activation period.
As Hurricane Ian hit Florida's Gulf Coast near Fort Myers on September 28, 2022, as a Category 4 storm, causing widespread devastation, SLSCO had already prepared by positioning assets and personnel to support the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM). They coordinated missions with FDEM from the State Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee and provided additional assistance at the State Logistics Response Center in Orlando.
After the hurricane's impact, SLSCO delivered vital equipment and materials while offering staffing, management, and catering services at various locations to support FDEM's response efforts. They even facilitated resource transfers to Sanibel Island, which had become inaccessible by road due to storm damage, by operating a crucial barge transport service.
