Project Summary
In March 2020, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) collaborated with AECOM and the SLS team to respond to the COVID-19 crisis by providing emergency medical care facilities and services to Suffolk County residents. Within just 48 hours of mobilization, the SLS team transformed the SUNY Westbury campus into a comprehensive field hospital. This endeavor involved the coordination of multiple subcontractors and over 300 trade personnel.
In a remarkably short span of 21 days, SLS successfully converted a university gym and athletic fields into a fully operational field hospital capable of accommodating over 1,100 patients, both acute and non-acute. The project encompassed a wide range of activities, including extensive site work, road and utility construction, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system conversions, structural modifications, and on-site construction. This impressive feat was accomplished in under three weeks.
